Subscription box wars: A deep dive into what’s become a $2.6B industry.

AMAZON

With 629 storefronts and counting, Amazon is quietly amassing a growing portfolio of physical locations from which to infiltrate your psyche. That’s still a small footprint compared to 4,700+ Walmart facilities, but in a time where others are retracting—an interesting trend to monitor. Location map here.

Five stars? Two years ago Amazon ‘cracked down’ on quid pro quo reviews—a practice where retailers passed free goods to customers in exchange for reviews. The solution is the Vine Program, which regulates the interactions and limits the amount of free goods customers are able to receive. Vine is now coming under scrutiny from watchdog groups alleging that Amazon is using the program to disproportionately promote Amazon’s private label products over independent resellers’ equivalents.

Proposed USPS rate hikes to take effect Jan 2019 will cost Amazon $1B in 2019, according to Credit Suisse.
